Remember those heady days in the tedious 1970s and early 1980s when films like “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” attained stellar success at the box office, resulting in a slew of holiday themed copycats? Movies like “April Fool’s Day,” “My Bloody Valentine,” and “Graduation Day” arrived on the scene and dropped off the radar objective as rapid. Thanks to the appearance of DVD players, these films are reappearing with a disturbing rapidity. Unfortunately, the movies aren’t worthy better than they were when they first came out. This is especially upright for Paramount’s release of the 1981 slasher film “My Bloody Valentine.” At the time, Paramount demanded a mountain of cuts from director George Mihalka in order to avoid a dreaded ‘X’ rating for graphic violence. That’s acceptable for a theatrical release, but a DVD version should reinsert all of the gory footage. Well, this release is the tedious feeble ‘R’ rated version, and to accomplish matters worse Paramount technicians included nothing else with the movie: no stills, no commentaries, no tedious the scenes stuff, and no trailers. Glean with the program, Paramount! The customer who will pick this movie on DVD is a genre fan; they want to gape all of those gory killings you lopped off with indifference.

“My Bloody Valentine” takes station in a miniature mining town called Valentine Bluffs. We don’t really know the dwelling of the town, but the accents of the some of the characters hint at a Canadian setting somewhere come Quebec. Some years before a dreadful mining accident resulting in the deaths of several miners caused Harry Warden to snap. Warden went on a killing spree through the town on the night of the Valentine’s Day dance. Ever since then, the authorities in Valentine Bluffs banned parties on Valentine’s Day, ever mindful of Harry Warden’s threat to wreak bloody havoc on the town if they held another dance. Harry Warden, for the picture, was one of the survivors of the mining accident, an accident caused by negligence on the fraction of two of the supervisors. After his murderous spree, Warden ended up in an insane asylum and the town slowly forgot his grim threats.

Now it’s the display (or at least 1981), and the mineworkers want to have another holiday party. The authorities, which include a neurotic mayor and a police chief who looks like Steve McQueen from a distance, are willing to go along with the view of a celebration. Then the valentines commence showing up, one of which contains a bloody human heart. The mayor and police chief initially try to withhold the threat hush-hush, but a few more murders persuade them to abolish the dance. The young people in town throw a fit, deciding that they will unruffled have a party but acquire it at the mine instead. You can guess what happens from this point on: bodies plunge like flies as a madman in mining gear (gas cloak, helmet, dim clothing, and pickax) works his contrivance through the group of bubbleheads. As the chief desperately attempts to track down the whereabouts of Harry Warden, a group of especially idiotic partygoers head down into the mine for a few yucks. The last twenty minutes of the film consume position in the darkly atmospheric mine, as the killer picks off several of the kids in the quarry. There’s a twist ending that achieves only a moderate level of interest, and then the whole thing ends.

“My Bloody Valentine” is a major rip off of other slasher films. This movie even has its occupy version of “Crazy Ralph” from “Friday the 13th” in the develop of a short-tempered bar owner who continually spouts stories about Harry Warden and the foolishness of throwing another party. You fair know this guy is going to obtain his, and he does, but I kept wondering how he got any business. Who wants to go to a residence where the proprietor keeps talking about ghastly murders? The other characters descend into typical slasher movie typecasting as well: the two guys fighting over the girl, the ineffective police chief and mayor who try to ignore the warning signs until it’s too slow, and the omnipresent killer. When it comes to novel and racy characters, “My Bloody Valentine” doesn’t offer worthy except stereotypes with abominable haircuts. Dismay movie buffs should rob ticket of Ray Sager’s name (as first assistant director) in the credits: Sager played Montag the Shapely in H.G. Lewis’s “The Wizard of Gore.”

At first, the gore seems to promise that “My Bloody Valentine” is a step above your typical slasher film. The heart in the box is unpleasant, but after that initial shocker the movie steps succor into rather banal exercises in the sauce department. The heavy handed editing is to blame here, as nearly every slay that takes spot either happens completely off camera (the conception of it!), or cuts away before the serious bloodletting starts. There are places where you can recognize what Paramount removed to come by that all-important ‘R’ rating, and it’s distinct that this film would have been powerful better if we could have seen the plump carry out of the killer’s actions. A boiled face, a hook through the head, and a body in a laundromat dryer sound large on paper, but the execution suffers horribly because we never accept the pudgy, grotesque carry out. It’s the equivalent of watching a Richard Pryor concert with all of the profanity bleeped out. I pray Paramount comes to their senses and finally releases this film, along with the first eight “Friday the 13th” movies, in uncut formats. “My Bloody Valentine,” as it stands now, falls squarely into the “rent, not take” category: an engaging film with large promise, but an ultimate failure due to circumstances beyond the control of the cast and crew.

I recently compiled an Amazon list of the Top 10 Slasher Films Before the 90′s. I placed MY BLOODY VALENTINE in the #7 slot. Upon watching it again, I realize that I should’ve placed it higher. Several other titles were ahead of it, including Anxiety Narrate, PROM NIGHT, and APRIL FOOL’S DAY. Those were all very first-rate examples of the slasher genre, but I don’t contemplate any of them rival MY BLOOD VALENTINE for sheer dismay, excitement, and novelty.

Start with an inviting setting. Rather than a college campus or high school, we have a bleak, blue-collar mining town. Instead of free-wheeling students or teenagers we have working class twentysomethings pushing thirty. Then add a creepy backstory: a mining accident that entombed and killed all but one of a handful of miners. That survivor, Harry Warden, had to resort to cannibalism until he was rescued, messing him up for eternity and a day. The next year, on Valentine’s Day, he returned (in pudgy miner’s garb with pick-axe) and brutally murdered the two supervisors who inadverdently caused the accident. He then slice their hearts out and sent it to the dance with a warning never to have another Valentine’s dance.

Flash forward to the prove. The townspeople are contemplating the first dance in twenty years. Naturally, a series of murders initiate, with the victim’s hearts carve out. Terrified, the police settle to murder the dance. Undeterred, the young folk choose to have a secret party (at the mine’s cafeteria) . And that’s when the genuine fun begins. Some highlights: a dude’s face scalded in a enormous pot of boiling water, and his cut-out heart being thrown in with the franks (yum), a girl getting her head impaled on a shower head (no repetition intended), and the local drunk becoming the victim of his occupy practical joke.

Of course, no film (slasher or otherwise) would be site around Valentine’s day without having a romantic supplot, and MY BLOODY VALENTINE is no exception. We’re introduced to Axel and T.J., two used friends now duking it out for the affections of Sarah (Lori Hallier, in the film’s best performance) . This triangle could’ve been more fully developed, but it was sufficient enought to retain the audience alive to. Who will bag Sarah? Axel or T.J.? And as the murders multiply (and intensify) the quiz becomes “What does Harry Warden want? ” Is it even him? Or someone else?

Watch this flick and win out. There’s a astronomical final act status in the darkened mine, with an extended cat and mouse wobble scene between the killer and T.J. and Sarah. This last half-hour rivals anything in HALLOWEEN. Scary last scene, too.

Bottom line? Craftsmanship-wise, MY BLOODY VALENTINE is no HALLOWEEN, but in some ways, it’s scarier.

For those who have not seen this movie, it is well worth the assume. Residence in unusual day London, a cop’s partner is “turned” on the eve of his wedding. As he investigates his partner’s failure to demonstrate and disappearance, he learns that vampires (or “leeches” as they are usually called — the word vampire is never aged) are proper. He is then co-opted into a special government branch — bustle by an ex Priest, a medical scientist, and a special forces operative — that is hunting the vampires.

Are the vampires putrid? Does religion really have anything to with them? Is the cross’s accomplish on vampires merely psychosomatic or is there loyal power there? Is the special branch unbiased a recent day version of the inquisition, oppressing the innocent?

It is to the show’s credit that you do not really know the answers to all of these questions until the last episode, though clues are sprinkled about throughout.

This is the best vampire fable I’ve ever encountered (book, movie, or series) . Although shown occasionally on the Sci Fi channel, owning the DVD is well worth the imprint to witness it for the first time.

For those who have seen the series on t.v., the DVD is composed worthwhile. Though there is not powerful in the method of extras, the DVD version seemed worthy easier to understand (and not objective because I had seen it before) . The sound quality is very favorable. On the t.v. version the conversation was sometimes hard to follow because of the English accents. Not so with the DVD. Being able to follow the conversations more closely added a lot to my viewing pleasure.

Worth it.

An elite group in the police department are pursuing original day vampires. But they aren’t running around killing vampires with wooden stakes. This British “miniseries” (6 episodes) gives an updated twist to the broken-down Vampire myths. For example, if a vampire can’t be seen in a mirror, it stands to reason that he can’t be seen on videotape. Hmmmm…. Provides a surveillance challenge!! Very inventive twists compose Ultraviolet engrossing to study!

However, it’s not objective the original updating of the account that makes this series a edifying discover. The epic development is edifying, and the characters are very well played. Probably most familiar to US audiences will be Susannah Harker in a very different role from her portrayal of Jane in the BBC/A&E production of “Pride and Prejudice”. She is agreeable as the doctor in the group, focusing on the medical aspects of the vampire challenge.

Very different in style from the US shows “Kindred: The Embraced” (available on DVD) and “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”, Ultraviolet is more focused on the psychological than blood and guts. “Kindred” and “Buffy” are action fare, “Ultraviolet” is psychological fare. If you like a psychological thriller with a small action thrown in and are intrigued by the Vampire narrative, you will like Ultraviolet.

James Garner’s laconic charm as Jim Rockford kept us coming befriend week after week and finally won him an Emmy in 1977. Garner, who would have been a star in any era, and sometimes seemed as if he would have fit more into films of the 1940′s, finally found the perfect role on television as Jim Rockford. He was an ex-con given a burly pardon when it was discovered he was innocent after all. Working as a P.I. and parking his gold Firebird in front of his trailor on the L.A. beach, Rockford could never quite shake the ex-con price, nor could he shake his passe cellmate, Evelyn “Angel” Martin.

Stuart Margolin was simply astounding as the scheming Angel, always with an angle, and always distinct to glean Rockford into anguish when it backfired. Like Rockford, you honest couldn’t quit indignant at Angel, no matter what con had blown up in his face or how worthy pain he would find our current TV detective in from time to time. Rockford and Angel remained friends because of that unspoken bond all ex-cons have, and because deep down, Angel was a stand-up guy, though you couldn’t always content it from looking at the surface.

Noah Beery Jr. portrayed Rockford’s lovable dad, Rocky. Rocky was a retired trucker who loved to fish, and passed on the hobby to Jim. It was the puny moments like fishing that were really the heart and soul of this exhibit when you end to reflect about it. There were always a few slice-of-life moments mingled in with the enormous car chases, gorgeous con games, and other assorted mischief, as Rockford tried to solve a closed case and discontinue out of jail at the same time. Some weeks he was unbiased trying to cease alive. Rocky would always give Jim that “watch” if he had to advance post bail.

Joe Santos was Rockford’s often inflamed police pal, Dennis Becker. He was the buffer between Rockford and Becker’s superiors, who hated Rockford and wanted any excuse to pull his P.I. license. Becker was a pal, but could only do so distinguished for Jim as he had to quit out of hot water himself. He had a wife and kids to encourage, and for some curious reason, that sometimes took priority over helping Rockford out of a complicated predicament.

Last, but by no means least, was Gretchen Corbett as lawyer Beth Davenport. The relationship between she and Rockford was complicated. They both had a deep affection for each other, which was sometimes complicated by the attorney-client relationship. Her efforts to sustain Jim out of worry with the cops took up a lot of her time. There was a romance of sorts between the two, but it never matured into something that would lead to marriage.

There were always solid guest stars, but it was Garner and his weekly regulars which made the prove what it was. Stephen J. Cannell and Roy Huggins created this astonishing series and Juanita Bartlett wrote some of the finest scripts ever done for television. James Garner was absolutely perfect as Jim Rockford, and it has become difficult as the years have passed to separate the two in our minds.

Garner was, and is, a enormous actor and conceal presence who made everything watch easy. This was a terrific expose and one of the best ever to be beamed into our homes once a week. Everyone loved “The Rockford Files” and couldn’t wait to hear Mike Post’s mammoth theme music each week. It was recorded and turned into a colossal radio hit and launched his career.

For a fourth season, we will find to listen to all those crazy messages left on Jim Rockford’s answering machine. Fans never missed the opening of the demonstrate because a smile or a proper laugh might be missed. You don’t want to miss it either.

“This is Jim Rockford. At the tone, leave your name and message and I’ll collect assist to you.”

Hard to digest the fact that this is coming out so terminate to the release of Season 3 (which I fair reviewed!) Anyway, I have seen some of these eps on my local TV and the dvd plot isn’t out yet but I suspect the quality will be as top notch as the previous seasons. What I wanted to weigh in on is the brillance gradual the present. How they continuously and yet CREDIBLY (very vital) got Jim Rockford into pains each week is nothing short of incredible… and when I hear Angel Martins quivering tell, no matter what is being said I HAVE to laugh. Shimmering! Throw in Becker and Joseph Rockford and you’ve got a bonafide hit… and of course I saved the “Beth” for last:) Gretchen Corbett my heart is quiet yours after all these years:) ~

TV will never be better than the Rockford Files, and I have to commend Universal on releasing these seasons so speedily, with Pretty artwork, and on single sided non-freezing discs… now can you redo the A-Team with similar quality control?? Charging people for discs that play 2 out of 6 episodes should be a crime even Beth couldn’t bail you out of. Now, release Season 5 next month:)

“Public Enemies” proves that Michael Mann is upright up there with Martin Scorsese at directing compelling crime dramas. This film, based on a book detailing the nexus of John Dillinger, J. Edgar Hoover, and Melvin Purvis, covers the last year and a half in the life of the famous bank robber, who was branded “Public Enemy Number 1″ by Hoover, who was building what would become the FBI. Chasing Dillinger for Hoover was Purvis, who relentlessly pursued Dillinger until the fateful night outside the Biography Theater in Chicago.

Johnny Depp plays Dillinger as a fun-loving but risky criminal whose only conception seems to be to live life on the edge until he falls off. As usual, his performance is enchanting and utterly believable. Billy Crudup wonderfully plays Hoover as a man obsessed with growing the Bureau, obsessed with public relations, and obsessed with capturing John Dilliger, and Christian Bale plays Purvis as an smart, expedient, and caught in the difficult region of trying to bag Dillinger while at the same time attractive a demanding, overbearing publicity seeker.

The film features tremendous supporting performances from Marion Cotillard as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Billie Frechette, and Stephen Lang as a traditional Bureau agent assigned to hunt Dillinger.

This is film has plenty of action and thrills, but also possesses enormous acting, sparkling writing, and masterful directing by Mann. Public Enemies is one the best films to reach out in the summer of ’09.

“Public Enemies”, helmed by notorious director Michael Mann, is a thriller of the most testosterone fueled variety. It’s a posthaste paced actioner brimming at the seams with intense shootouts and a well-stocked cast of steely-eyed, square-jawed men harboring classic narcissistic complexes. Johnny Depp makes a suave, calculating Dillinger. It’s more of a manufactured character than an interpretation of the true life Dillinger, but this is of small consequence because Depp achieves expansive theatrics with his peevish glare and devil-may-care attitude. He plays it grand as I imagine Steve McQueen would’ve in his heyday, plowing through his world with a sort of darkly frosty, apathetic demeanor that suggests he doesn’t care one intention or the other about anything.

The supporting characters are superlative as well, particularly Stephen Dorff as Homer Van Meter. There’s an intensity to his character that Dorff really brings out. In fact, I didn’t even examine him at first (interestingly, he looked very similar to actor Tim DeKay) . Jason Clarke, who portrays John “Red” Hamilton, is an actor primarily known for his television work. I surmise he was chosen for his striking resemblance to the precise life criminal; honest compare his photograph to the disagreeable mug of Hamilton. He’s probably the most featured gangster, other than Dillinger, being that Hamilton is portrayed as his accurate hand man. Of course, Christian Bale turns in an able performance as respected G-Man Melvin Purvis – donning yet another one of his notorious accents for the role.

The film begins in media res with an involving jailbreak, something which I greatly enjoyed. I was overjoyed the film didn’t ruin time trying to clarify Dillinger’s childhood and upbringing. There is no hollow attempt to apply reason to his actions or area blame for his anti-social behavior. In the extinguish it doesn’t matter what led him to a life of crime, particularly since over the years the man has transformed from a folk hero into a veritable record. It’s definite Mann’s vision was ambitious. He attempted to pack all the nuances and complexities of Dillinger’s world into only two hours and because of this the ruin product is a bit too busy. I find the feeling that a bit of streamlining the script might not have been an dreadful understanding. That aside, it’s obvious that Mann knew what audiences wanted to perceive is a rip-roarin’ buy on the robberies, shootouts, and defiance of the law that filled the bulk of Dillinger’s life proper on up until the bitter slay. This film performs those functions in spades!

The major lacking feature of the film is that characterization takes a backseat to the action. This is, perhaps, inevitable considering the grand ensemble cast and the fact that nearly every character is based on a very true, very celebrated person. Often many seemingly attractive characters never quite gel with the audience because their screentime is so brief. One such character is Gilbert Catena, portrayed by Domenick Lombardozzi (probably best known for his role on HBO’s The Wire) . Collected, those aspects aside, every performance here is stellar. Impartial explore at the supporting cast which includes: David Wenham, Marion Cotillard, Giovanni Ribisi, and Billy Crudup, among others. It’s my eager hope that upon its release to home video there’s an extended crop of the film because I would fancy to peer more of these characters (especially Dazzling Boy Floyd, since he is only in the film for a scant couple of minutes) .

I’ve noticed many critics mention that the film unnecessarily milks the climax of the film, which is obviously Dillinger’s execution outside of the Biograph Theatre. I didn’t mind this so distinguished because it’s such an iconic event of the Public Enemy era, and more than that, the film portrays Dillinger’s death with loyal detail and follows what we know of the trusty event to the letter. The scene features numerous clips of the film Dillinger watched: Manhattan Melodrama, the gangster vehicle starring Clark Gable.

The film surmises, with worthy reason, that Dillinger probably identified with Gable’s character. It illustrates this by showing one of the haunting final scenes, when William Powell offers to have his death sentence commuted, Gable replies with “You deem you’re doing me a favor by keeping my locked up in this joint for the rest of my life? I don’t want it. If I can’t live the map I want, then at least let me die the plot I want.” Dillinger’s face expressed titanic belief, perhaps even compassion, with this statement. It’s a tremendous cinematic moment, especially since the audience is very well aware of what is about to transpire in his maintain life.

I give bonus points to the production crew for so aptly depicting mid-west America during the Depression. Many real-life buildings were redressed to study as they did during the time and their efforts greatly enhance the atmosphere. Then there are the detailed setpieces (one of my favorites, though it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it one, is Gilbert’s shop), the hairstyles and slick suits, the classic cars – they hit all the notes correctly. There’s even some obsolete slang film fans will remember from gangster films made in the thirties, such the calling of prison guards “screws”.

The robbery scenes, being the lynchpin of any Dillinger epic, are somewhat brief but accurately characterize Dillinger’s tactics and methods. Also, concerning valid history, this film does lift liberties with what really occurred (like any film does) . Perhaps the most egregious liberties are taken concerning the demises of the various gangsters. For instance, Fair Boy Floyd is depicted as being killed months prior to Dillinger’s death (Dillinger even references his demise to Pervis), when in fact he died months afterward. Also, Homer Van Meter survived Dillinger, only to be killed a month later. These aspects are often a distinguished wicked, because a filmmaker must strike a balance between reality and entertainment – and the two do not always intersect seamlessly. If you want a version that follows the facts exclusively – hold the book.

In summation, “Public Enemies” may not be remembered as a classic action film, but it will be remembered as a classic gangster film. The most gratifying aspect is that, novel for most action films, all the actors turn in very memorable performances. Some critics and the press have commented on how Bale is absent from nearly all the trailers and promotional materials for this film, but when you ogle it, the reason is quite understandable. This is unquestionably Depp’s film, and though I concede to not having a particular predilection for him, his role here is not to be missed. This is well worth the imprint of admission!

The film opens with a shot of the river, and then a montage of sepia tone photographs of Missoula Montana in the 1930′s. Redford memorably recreates the period, in an ode to early America. Norman McLean is (snort over narration by Robert Redford) recalling the memories of his life since past. We learn that he and his brother Paul (Brad Pitt) were brought up by his strict Presbyterian preacher father (Tom Skerrit), in an extremely conservative environment, their father introducing them to glide fishing, and yet making no certain distinction between the two. Although it will near to succor as a counter point to their religious grounding (Freedom versus Restraint) . Soar fishing serves as a metaphor for the diagram that each son will reach life, literally and symbolically. The River (Water) is a constant motif in the film that also serves as the never-ending physical and emotional challenge that will eventually shape their destinies.

We learn that Paul (Brad Pitt) is the rebellious younger brother, who “toughness came from somewhere deep inside of him”, while Norman (Craig Sheffer) is the more conservative brother. In an early scene, Paul further rebels and refuses to eat his food. We glance the boys grow up. Paul comes up with an plan to choose a rowboat and “shoot the chutes”, (scoot the boat down the immense waterfall) everyone else chickens out when they finally approach the river, except Paul and Craig. Craig reluctantly goes along with his brother’s impulsive urges, for scare of looking terrorized. Abet at home, the boys are confronted by their distraught parents, who found out from another one of the boys parents. Their father tells them that they will go to church and pray for forgiveness. The next morning during lunch, Norman and Paul acquire in a brawl that is a result of their two personalities clashing. We hear that was the only time they ever fought. Norman is approved into Dartmouth College on the east fly, while Paul stays in Montana. This begins to foreshadow Paul’s inability to change his position, while Norman has the means to inspect his absorb path. Four years later, Norman returns home, Paul has taken a job as a Helena reporter, and developing as a glide fisherman. In their first fishing scuttle together, we learn that Paul has broken free from the structure of his father’s “four count rhythm” and developed a more improvisational technique called “shadow casting”. We originate to glance how wing fishing will symbolize the course of Paul’s life.

He makes arrangements to peep her again, and they meet Paul and his Indian girlfriend one night. Paul, has brought his Native American partner along, (a statement to the rebellion of his character) and causes some commotion at the bar. We meet Jessie’s brother Neal, who is visiting from California, an arrogant, self flattering drunk, who is the heart of the Burn’s family. Norman agrees to engage Jessie’s brother Neal fishing one day, and they return to catch Neal and his friend passed out in the sun among a couple of empty beer bottles. In a mirrorlike state, Jessie and her brother are symbolic of Paul and Norman. Jessie as Norman, and Neal as Paul. (label the similarity in name) Jessie asks Norman “How near the people who need the most benefit, won’t acquire it.” Norman is not able to retort her, and it is through their relationship that we launch to eye the McLean’s more clearly.

The film slowly unfolds itself, letting the viewer indulge in it’s subtle yet remarkable storylines. Perhaps it is so effective because it appears matter of factly. It does not arrive across heavy handedly. Norman is called by the police set to catch his brother up one day, having gotten into a fight over his girlfriend. Paul becomes increasingly in debt at the local gambling house, and has also become an alcoholic. As his life slowly spirals into oblivion, he is unaware of the consequences of his actions. Norman immediately recognizes the destructive path that his brother is heading towards and offers to benefit. Paul stubbornly refuses to seize the money and encourage that his brother has offered to him. Norman has been celebrated to hiss at the University of Chicago and urges Paul to near with him. Paul realizes that he will never leave Montana, and so does Norman. In the family’s final flee fishing dawdle together, Paul has seemingly transcended the art of glide fishing, having mastered his map of “shadow casting”, and makes an astounding obtain. Paul has ironically found freedom from his father’s religious upbringing through glide fishing, although he is simultaneously being destroyed by his absorb rebellion. We are presented with the duality of man and his conflicting inner desires to obtain equilibrium on many levels. Although Paul has found peace with nature, he is struggling to settle inner demons that plague him. The inner demons that will eventually raze him.

Redford’s commentary on the healing power of nature and the stubbornness of the human spirit is a a testament to man’s universal struggle against himself. Indirectly, we inspect that there is only so worthy a family or person can do to protect someone. We realize that appreciate is simply not enough, and that eventually a person will win their have path that they were meant to choose. The River ultimately symbolizes the destinations that are unstoppable as noteworthy as nature itself is unstoppable. Everyone’s course is their have. In its ambiguity and power, it is at once haunting and graceful.

*The rerelease A River Runs Through It contains a sign original Anamorphic widescreen presentation, the image is glorious, although “Deluxe Edition” is misleading. Aside from trailers, text only filmographies, and a collectible scrapbook, there are no additional special features*

This review refers to the Columbia/Tristar DVD edition of “A River Runs Through It”…

Even with Brad Pitt co-starring in this film, it was the awesome cinematography that kept me mesmerized. Filmed in the lush mountains and rivers of Montana, director Robert Redford and Director of Photography Phillipe Rousselot(who won an Oscar for his work on this film) retract the beauty of this land and the fable.

Based on a autobiographical novella by Norman Maclean, we are swept attend to the earlier fragment of the 20th century with the Maclean family. Family, church and Skim fishing came above all else. Norman, played at the younger age by newcomer Joseph Gordon-Levitt(who was honored with the Young Artists award in 1993 for his performance), and his younger brother Paul are end and reach from a loving but highly disciplined household, accelerate by their stern father(Tom Skerritt) the Reverend of the puny town church. The Rev. is strict when it comes to their education, but a ample allotment of that education is the freedom to fly-fish, enjoyed by all the Maclean men.

We discover as Norman and Paul grow into men(Craig Scheffer/Brad Pitt) and how differently their lives turn out. Norman grows into a stunning scholar, but Paul takes a different path. His is one of a rebel, who finds anguish at every turn. But always they have their appreciate for each other, their family, and their admire of fly-fishing. Paul turns it into an art that is a notice to explore in that dazzling Montana scenery.

Other heavenly performances are turned in by Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Maclean, Emily Lloyd as Jessie Burns, the girl Norman loses his heart to and Vann Gravage who plays the young Paul. A aesthetic music get by Sign Isham adds greatly to the concept without being obtrusive to the memoir. A aesthetic screenplay by Richard Freidenberg will design you in and maintain you there. It’s a ample rupture from action movies without getting overly dramatic.

It is rated PG, but probably not appropiate for the younger viewers, there are some adult themes as well as brief nudity.

Columbia has done justice to this beautifully filmed movie in it’s transfer to DVD. Honest Glorious! Remastered in anamorphic widescreen(if you remove plump hide, that is on side B) with noble clarity of the colors as well as the represent. The sound remastered in Dolby 2.0 Surround was very agreeable, but I would have loved to hear it in 5.1. It may be viewed in French, Spanish(also stereo),or Portuguese(mono), and has subtitles in these languages as well as English. There are theatrical trailers and Talent files, but no other special features.

If your in the mood for a tremendous action thriller, this is NOT it! This is a film to honest sit attend and enjoy…..Oh and I really did delight in Brad Pitt’s performance(almost as remarkable as the scenery) …relish….Laurie

Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 2 is spacious. It features a multitude of Mickey/Pluto shorts and some really chilly extras. Each cartoon has its suited points and unpleasant points (some more than others) but overall a very, very awesome dwelling. The best share is having Mickey and the Beanstalk, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, and The Prince and the Pauper all together in one spot :)

Unfortunately, when you consume the Play All feature, it doesn’t honest play the cartoons. Many of the cartoons feature a brief introduction from DVD host Leonard Maltin. Now, you would consider these introductions would instruct you a bit about the history of the short, how the narrative was conceived, who directed it, whatever. But, no, all these introductions are for is to warn viewer about possible “offensive” material found in the shorts. It really saddens me that we live in a world where people cannot seek the past as past and net they method things were at the time. Instead, we have these really annoying clips of Maltin telling us how remarkable more “enlightened” we are nowadays. He says the same repetitive things in each intro.

The public domain releases of veteran cartoon from the ’30s and ’40s that you can glean at Wal-Mart for a dollar have the same type of supposedly offensive material (actually, probably more of it than anything Disney would ever have) . We don’t, however, have Leonard Maltin there warning us of the dangers of supposedly un-PC material. Whatever. Aside from that, this residence is awesome! :)
